Method Validations
In the field of food microbiology and toxicology, as in many other areas of scientific research, the concepts of microbiological methods validation seem daunting because of complex 1) Experimental design and data collection requirements, 2) Statistical models used because of the nature of microbiology and) structured reports required to enhance laboratory quality assurance programs. A set of quantifiable 鈥渒ey performance indicators鈥 are necessary characteristics used to describe each method. Internationally accepted 鈥渒ey performance indicators鈥 such as precision, accuracy are defined by FDA, ISO, Codex, AOAC and in the other relevant literature. Microbiological method KPIs and the way how they are calculated is key to a reliable scientific process. Simply following a standard method protocol may not yield reliable results with known KPI. To achieve comparable and reproducible outcomes (of a microbiological method), two critical factors are necessary: competent laboratories and robust/performant methods. The essential tools required for this are method validation and proficiency testing. Trainings for method validation and proficiency testing schemes are available here, offering microbiologists in the field of food safety important resources they need to ensure accuracy and reliability in their work.
