State constitutions set rules for federal elections, such as requiring votes by ballot instead of by voice, even under the Articles of Confederation that preceded the Constitution, said constitutional law professor Carolyn Shapiro. “There’s nothing in the contemporaneous materials to suggest that anybody intended” what proponents of the independent state legislature theory contend.

“The independent state legislature theory would create a situation where if a state court said, ‘Well, this law is unconstitutional under our state constitution,’ it would still have to apply to federal elections,” law professor Carolyn Shapiro said. “We’d end up with this very bizarre dual system that would be chaotic and confusing, and it’s completely unlike anything we’ve ever had.”

“We recognized that we needed to go beyond preservation into what we’ve been calling ‘heritage renovation,’” said Dirk Denison, architecture professor and design principal for the project.

Because these cases take so long, attorneys who take them may end up bearing years and years of risk of not being paid.”

“We’re teaching you these concepts, but you don’t see the connection between the concepts and how it’s going to play out in the world,” said Lance Fortnow, dean of the College of Computing to NPR's Marketplace. “This idea of bringing companies in early … then as you’re learning, you can see, ‘Oh, I see how maybe I can apply this idea to what the company is doing.'”

“One of the biggest misconceptions is that people think that they’re not a target for hackers or malicious actors,” said Calvin Nobles, chair of the Department of Information Technology and Management. “All of us are connected today 24/7, so we have to understand that ... we are vulnerable.”

“It is important for us to make sure that we partner with a lot of the companies in the city, providing internships and other opportunities, and work with the schools in Chicago to provide pathways that lead them into great tech careers,” said Lance Fortnow, dean of the College of Computing.

������̳’s Master of Engineering in Architectural Engineering and Master of High Performance Buildings programs earned the designation for their emphasis on sustainable design and energy efficiency.

“Everyone knows what it means to be depressed or (have) anxiety, but the fundamental thing about stigma is difference,” said Patrick Corrigan, ������̳ professor of psychology. “While one may get depressed occasionally or a bit euphoric once in a while, most people don't know what it's like to be in the throes of a manic episode.”
